An awareness event on breast cancer and the importance of its early detection was launched yesterday in front of the Faculty of Architectural Engineering. The event was organized by Homs University in cooperation with the Syrian Cancer Society in Homs on the occasion of Pink October.
\nProf. Waleed Khadam, Vice President for Scientific Affairs, emphasized the importance of such awareness activities in spreading health education and promoting societal awareness. He indicated that breast cancer is one of the cancer types with high recovery rates when detected in its early stages, making early detection and periodic check-ups essential factors in improving treatment outcomes. Furthermore, he stressed the university’s role in supporting health and educational initiatives that contribute to protecting public health, reinforcing the concepts of prevention and early detection, and encouraging women to undergo the necessary exams.
\nFor his part, Dr. Ahmad Zahi Al-Shawwaf, Chairman of the Syrian Cancer Society, emphasized the significance of this event in promoting the early detection of breast cancer, given its pivotal role in increasing recovery opportunities\u2014which can reach exceptionally high rates and even full recovery when the disease is detected in its initial stages. He stressed the vital role of youth in spreading health awareness and educating society, starting with the family as the basic core for building a culture of prevention. Furthermore, he highlighted the opening of a specialized breast cancer detection clinic at the University Hospital, which provides screening services using ultrasound and mammography, thereby contributing to the enhancement of early detection services and ensuring the availability of necessary medical exams.
\nThe campaign features the distribution of awareness leaflets and the active participation of a group of fourth-year medical student volunteers, alongside postgraduate students specializing in surgery and gynecology. These volunteers are tasked with spreading health awareness and education, answering visitors’ inquiries, and providing information regarding the importance of early detection and preventive measures.
