On the occasion of the international day of persons with disabilities, Al-Baath University held a social event entitled “Fom Disability to Ability” in cooperation with the Village of Special Needs in Deir Atiyah, at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
Vice President of Al-Baath University for Scientific Affairs, Prof. Maan Salameh, explained the importance of the event in learning about all new technologies and specializations that help in caring for disabled childen in all psychological and motor aspects and providing them with necessary treatments such as speech therapy and physical therapy, so they can integrate into society since childhood. Moreover, he indicated that social support, in addition to the health care, is required and has to be provided through full concerted efforts by family and society to remove misconceptions regarding disability and disseminate the right ideas on how to deal with them to be equipped with performace and coping abilities. He also pointed out that the university provides full support for such activities as they consolidate educational ideas among students and link the university with community.
Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Hazem Dahman, referred that true disability is community helplessness and submissiveness.
Faculty vice-dean and the event coordinator, Prof. Salah Ghazi, indicated that educational obstacles facing children with disabilities are due to cultural factors and discriminatory social practices, poor educational strategies, and weak physical infrastructure.
In turn, the village manager, Mr. Ahmed Kaour, expressed the village pride in cooperating with a prestigious university such as Al-Baath University, as the faculty made two scientific trips for practical application and direct communication with children.
He also provided an explanation about the village and its sections that strive to attract these people and build their capabilities from scratch until they become active in society.
The event was attended by the member of party leadership at the university branch, Prof. Adnan Sheikh Hammoud, and the head of teachers’ syndicate at the university, Prof. Abdul Razzaq Al-Sufi, and a crowd of interested individuals.
