Homs University Hospital has witnessed a medical achievement, olfactory groove meningioma surgery which is the first of its kind at the hospital.
The director of the university hospital, Dr. Samih Khalouf, explained that the patient, who came from Hama, had visited the neurosurgery clinic. In addition, the patient had been suffering from memory loss for two weeks, accompanied by a sudden seizure and severe headache 20 days earlier.
The magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 7 cm meningioma at the base of the anterior cranial fossa, which necessitated surgical removal.
The surgery was successfully performed by the consultant neurosurgeon, Dr. Jalal Hassoun Al-Najjar, with the participation of resident doctors: Dr. Mohsen Issa and Dr. Yara Dunya, and under the supervision of the anesthesia team: Dr. Hakam Al-Akhras, Dr. Heba Allah Al-Lababidi, and Dr. Asmaa Shorba.
President of Homs University, Prof. Tarek Houssam ElDeen, noted that this achievement reflects the medical proficiency level of the hospital and confirms that the university and the teaching hospital have the ability to provide highly specialized services on a par with major medical centers. He also explained that these successes represent an ongoing effort to support scientific research and practical training for young doctors, and demonstrate the integrated work between teaching and clinical staff to serve the community and improve the health situation in the governorate.
The patient was kept under medical observation for a week, then was discharged in good general condition and with a normal neurological examination. Images of the case were published with his consent.
