Homs University Hospital witnessed the first corneal transplant using modern devices and techniques in the Department of Ophthalmological surgery, as part of a distinguished scientific event that included a specialized lecture entitled “Protocols of Treatment and Transplantation of the Cornea and DALK using Big Bubble & Melles Methods”, presented by a group of specialist doctors, namely: Dr. Muhammad Ziad Ayoun, Dr. Tarik Moussa, and Dr. Anas Akram Anbari, in cooperation with the Syrian Doctors Syndicate and a number of supporting medical and humanitarian institutions.
President of Homs University, Prof. Tarek Houssam ElDeen, has indicated that this event comes withing the university’s vision to develop the medical education and scientific research anhance integration between the academic and clinic aspects. In addition, he has pointed out that the university constantly supports the community, promotes education and qualifies the medical cadres to keep pace with the latest developments and innovations in the field of ophthalmology.
For his part, the director of the university hospital, Prof. Fahed Shreibati, has explained that the ophthalmological surgery department which has been inaugurated since three years and includes twenty resident doctors of different specializations has suffered from shortage of equipment and logistics necessary during the training period. He has also noted that medical organizations’ support has contributed to providing the department with advanced devices for carrying out quality surgeries,including cornea transplant, that has been performed for the first time in Homs governorate.
Furthermore, he has added that such qualitative shift improves the department’s readiness to provide advanced services together with integrated training environment that raises the efficiency of resident doctors and serves citizens at the best medical level.
Head of the Atlantic Humanitarian Relief, Dr. Hammam Akbik, has noted that the organization has provided the Department of Ophthalmological surgery with modern devices so the cornea transplant has been carried out for the first time in the governorate, as part of the activities of the “Restoring Hope” campaign launched by the organization with the aim of supporting the health and humanitarian sector.
This initiative is an important milestone in the development of Homs University Hospital and in consolidating its position as an advanced training and surgical center at the national level, which contributes to supporting continuing medical education and developing the skills of medical personnel.
