The Faculty of Law at Homs University organized a specialized workshop on “International Humanitarian Law” in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, targeting 40 postgraduate and undergraduate students.
The university president, Prof. Tarek Houssam El-Deen, stressed that the workshop stems from the university’s firm keenness to promote partnerships with effective international and local organizations and authorities. He indicated that the university is no longer merely a place for learning theoretical sciences, but has rather become a vital platform for raising awareness, building national capacities, and consolidating the principles of international humanitarian law and noble humanitarian concepts in academic circles.
In his turn, the director of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent in Homs, Dr. Moataz Atasi, indicated that the workshop is being held through fruitful partnership with the university and the International Committee of the Red Cross, with the participation of international specialists in international humanitarian law.
For her part, the head of the ICRC delegation in Homs, Ms. Shianshun Hu, stated that it is part of the Ministry of Higher Education’s action plan in cooperation with the committee to enhance academic research and disseminate the rules of international humanitarian law, outlining the ICRC’s independent and impartial humanitarian role in providing protection and assistance to victims of armed conflicts, and supporting the integration of international conventions into national legislations.
The workshop lasts for two days and includes on its first day a number of lectures and sessions: an introductory overview of the ICRC and its activities in Syria, an introductory overview of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, an introduction to international humanitarian law (covering its sources, scope of application, and relationship with other laws), and the principles of international humanitarian law.
