As part of the collaboration between academic institutions and international organizations to address environmental challenges, Homs University, represented by the director of the Higher Institute for Water Management, Dr. Mahmoud Al-Sibai, participated in a workshop organized by UNICEF entitled “Water Management in Homs During Drought”.
The workshop, attended by experts, academics, and government representatives, aimed to discuss the reality of drinking water services in Homs, develop an urgent response plan to current challenges, and offer sustainable solutions to enhance water security in cooperation with all relevant parties.
The President of Homs University, Prof. Tarek Houssam ElDeen, praised the university participation in the workshop, emphasizing its commitment to strengthening its pioneering role in scientific research and finding practical solutions to environmental challenges. He has also explained that employing desalination and reuse technologies, along with hydrological modeling and climate forecasting, forms the basis for developing effective strategies that ensure the sustainability of water resources for future generations.
For his part, Dr. Al-Sibai has indicated that this workshop represents an important step toward enhancing scientific and practical cooperation to find sustainable solutions to the region’s water crisis. He has explained that the importance of these efforts is multiplied within the context of climate changes; declining rainfall, rising temperatures, and recurring drought cycles.
Inaddition, he has confirmed the need for concerted efforts between academic institutions and relevant authorities to develop effective strategies that ensure the sustainability of water resources for future generations.
Homs University continues to expand its scientific partnerships, contributing to integrated water management and enhancing water security in the light of climate change.
